Pioneer Sholes School

Updated: May 2, 2019

Once the center for local children's education, Pioneer Sholes School now teaches both kids and adults the history of Northern Illinois' one-room schoolhouses.

History

Pioneer Sholes School is a one-room schoolhouse located at LeRoy Oaks Forest Preserve in St. Charles, Ill.

The historic building was built in 1872 on the farm of David Sholes in Burlington Township.

Louis Schairer then bought the Sholes land. Schairer was greatly involved in the school affairs of the time.

The building was used as the school for the surrounding area until 1947. It was then closed because of Kane County’s school consolidation project.

Sholes School was donated to the Kane County Forest Preserve in 1979 by a man named Campbell, who owned the land at the time. His mom taught at the school from 1913-1915.

Visiting and Tours

According to Alice Maupin, the director of Durant House Museum and Pioneer Sholes School, Sholes School is open Thursdays (June-August) and Sundays (June-September) from 1-4 p.m.

It is also open for you to visit when the Durant House holds special events. My previous blog post on the Durant House has dates and times for programs.

During open hours and special events, docents are on site to greet you and provide information about the history of the building. Crafts and games are typically available.

You can also schedule private tours as well as school visits.
