The Powers-Walker House

Situated amidst the rolling prairie of Glacial Park Conservation Area in McHenry County, Ill. rests the historic Powers-Walker House.

History

Elon and Mary Powers moved to Northern Illinois in 1845 with their five children. They settled in what is now the McHenry County.

It wasn't until 1854 that the current Greek Revival-style house was built. The home's construction was due to the growth in the Powers family which then included eight children.

In 1863 the family moved out of the historic home.

The property was then acquired by Samuel Walker, who owned more than 24 farms in the region.

Conservation

Over 140 years after its original construction, the house naturally underwent some deterioration to its historic qualities. Despite the modernization of the home, it was discovered that the Powers-Walker House still possessed many of its original architectural features.

The house was scheduled to be demolished in 1996, but the home's local historic value prevented that tragic end.

In 1998, a volunteer group sponsored by the McHenry County Conservation District began restoration on the historic house.

Events and Recreation

The Powers-Walker house now has special events scheduled throughout the year as well as tour hours during select summer weekends.

No matter the meaning for your visit, this historic house offers a glimpse into the past lives of those who once called it home.

Surrounded by the picturesque natural area of Glacial Park, a visit to the Powers-Walker house offers a day full of peaceful indulgence into history and nature.
